edinburgh’s magical christmas markets // in pictures

December is a magical month. Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah or just the opportunity to have some days off work (hallelujah), the holidays are nearly here and most places are decked out like crazy. I’m talking lights, golden tinsel, bling bling, Christmas trees, the whole thing. Edinburgh is one of those places; Christmas markets go live around the 17th of each November and the whole of the city centre looks simply magical. From Princess Street’s Christmas market stalls to fun terrifying games (including the Sky Flyer that looks just like a tad too close to the Scott Monument, and the Drop Tower’s 80m rise and plunge back to earth), and from new installations that spring out every year (this time it’s the Ice Adventure in George Street) to cute huts whose seductive smell invites you in for a food and pastry pit stop.

Now, if you are a #holidayhater, I get it. The streets are flooded with people, you can never get anywhere on time due to traffic, there are screaming children everywhere and you are broke because you spent all of your money on gifts. Nonetheless, you can try to lighten up the mood just a little bit (I can feel your hatred towards me and the holidays growing even more now) and even hack the holiday season by doing all your shopping online or enjoying a cheeky crêpe at the Christmas Markets on a Tuesday evening when it’s not crazy crowded.
So regardless of your personal feelings towards this (most wonderful) time of the year, I hope you enjoy the pictures and the beauty of Christmas in Edinburgh.

Tip: If When you find yourself freezing to death, head over to the Christmas Markets Bar for some glühwein (danke, Germany) or hot chocolate. Once your body is defrosted, step out onto the bar’s balcony; you will be back to frozen land in minutes, but will also get some of the best views of the markets and of Edinburgh’s city centre #worthit.
